Race Results for Round 2 of the 2009  Orange Park Derby at the Orange Park Kennel Club
1/26/2009 - Penny Candy Only Undefeated - DQ Wins 4 of 5 Rounds
It was quite an evening for the DQ Williams Kennel as they proved again why they are the perennial winner of the win title here on the Jacksonville Racing Circuit. Not only did they win 4 of the 5 stakes rounds on the card, they won 7 of the 14 races. Yep that's right half of the card was won by greyhounds from the DQ Williams Barn.

Included in that run was Penny Candy. Breaking again from the 8 box in the 11th race, Penny looked like an easy winner after her last race, but that was not how the night played out. She was beaten out of the starting box in this effort by Where's Elrika and Flying Brutus and took a hard knock in the early turn that set her back a bit. Running like the true champion that she is, she put her head back down and came running up the backside to take control of this race. Sure there was a late charge by Xtra Style, just as everyone expected, but it was just too little too late. Penny easily won by 2 1/2 lengths and remains as the only undefeated greyhound in the stakes. Style was second, Elrika faded back to show and capping off the superfecta was Flying Brutus.

Most of the winning times were close to the same on Monday evening, but the best of the best goes out to Wired To Wind. This greyhound found his break again and no one was going to catch him in this effort. He dominated on the front end as he was never in question and finished off in a speed 37.67 second clocking. As always DQ has taken another strong sprinter and converted them to a threat to win the Orange Park Derby. Go Figure? It never seems to amaze me the quality and consistency of their greyhounds. Simply amazing. Up next was Ask Jenny who finally got around the turn clear and ran a big race in second place. She was chasing the pace throughout and coming home she turned it on a bit and even closed up on the leader before the wire. Chasing in third for the majority of this race was Uss Argentina, but by the far turn her time had run out as Ina's Ace came driving up to steal away the finals spot in the trifecta before the finish line. Argentina had to settle for fourth.

The big surprise winner of the evening for the DQ Williams Kennel was Dirty Picture. Another converted sprinter who has taken well to the added distance. He didn't break in the last round, but in this one it was a whole different story. He dominated from the starting box and stole away 5 lengths early on over this field and at the end he was going to need every bit of it as his chasers refused to give up. By the far turn the lead was still 4 lengths, but it was in the deep stretch where it got interesting. Kiowa Truefriend was putting on a closing clinic as she was getting closer and closer and closer to the leader with every stride. Time ran out on her though, but she did make up 2 1/2 lengths in the stretch. Third best was Gs Tyrone as he came hard from last to take home the show position and Lover Girl Tiffy showed some grit too as she found a way into the superfecta at the finish line.

The final DQ winner in the stake rounds was Lover Girl Bambi. This little girl has really come into her own as of late and I'm sure trainer David Helton is pleased, as he also owns Bambi. Thru 2 rounds she has finished a close 3rd and has posted up a victory. Helping her was back to back one boxes and he desire to close late and challenge the leaders in the stretch. In this race that is just what she did. She broke close and moved up throughout the race. In the far turn she ducked to the rail and simply outrun Santa's Playgirl to the wire for the win. Playgirl, who has been short as of late, did just what she was supposed to do in this race. She hit the lid and lead all the way to the deep stretch. Sure she surrendered late, but this effort was better than the last couple that she has put up. Finishing off the trifecta was the hard charging Uss Contender. Contender just needs to get things started a bit earlier as he has finished well with a dead head second in the 1st round and a third here, but will need to improve on those numbers if he wants to make the finals. GS Kruz did find his break and was a game chaser for the majority of this effort. Sure he was short late, but most of the time he was. This was a much better race than his first effort and if Playgirl wasn't in this one, he would have been clearly on the lead tonight. After being passed late, he settled for the finals spot in the superfecta tonight.

The only race not won by a DQ greyhound was by a B & J entry, Se's We Goin Too. Finally this greyhound made it around clear and shoed that she can run this far. Like I said after the first round, she had run her best effort in third and now she has built on that with her first win over the 660 yard course. What is more impressive is how she did it. She made up ground throughout closing from almost last and running down a first round winner, Kiowa True Love, on the late lead. True Love still looked really good in this effort as she missed by just a nose from winning back to back races. Pat C Shes Right ran a huge race too. She came from way, way, way back as she bolted up the stretch and made the leaders think about it at the finish line. Holding on for fourth at the wire was Flying Epic. He ran a game effort throughout and was in contention for the duration.
