With just 3 races left in the 2009 $25,000 Orange Park Derby the competition has heated up, but you would have never know watching Penny Candy in the 11th race on the card. She made it look way to easy in this effort. She broke close and chase the leaders to the far turn, where she was just sick and tired of running from behind. She turned on the jets and left the rest of the field in her dust. She finished 4 lengths clear of the field as she remained the only undefeated greyhound thru three rounds of the stakes. Kudos go out to Gs Kruz, who finally found his break and made the front in this effort. He led for the majority of this race and even though he couldn't hang tough late, he still gave it his all for show. Sneaking past him late with Penny Candy was the other DQ entry in this qualifying field, Lover Girl Bambi. Bambi showed some late drive of her own as she took advantage of the inside post and rallied from way back after encountering serious trouble at the break. Completing the superfecta was Kiowa True Love who was game thru the early stages of this race and jsut continued to decline thruout.

Talk about giving your best in a stakes race, that is just what Kat Jackofhearts did in the 7th. I know he won in thew 1st round too, but this race was something special. He has always been game on the lead, when he has made it there, but this race took it to a different level. Breaking from the every tough 5 box he took instant control of this race. He drove ahead of the pack and had things well under control as they made it to the escape. Down the backside Uss Contender poked her nose in front and took away the lead. Normally Kat might have stopped and decided to race for place, but not in this effort. He put his head back down and by the far turn he had regained the lead and control of this race. Down the stretch he just kept on keeping on all the way to the wire as he posted up the fastest time of the evening at 37.47 seconds. Uss Contender was a game second at the finish line as he held off a late charge by Pat C Go Boy, who closed from last and was gaining with every stride in the stretch. Dirty Picture completed the superfecta with a solid chasing effort, as he was ousted in a photo for show at the finish line.

Saving the biggest upset for last, Pat C Shes Right put it to the 9th race field in the stretch at 21-1. No one thought that she could get back in this effort, especially the way she breaks, but tonight was her night. Helping her out in the far turn was the leaders. Lover Girl Tiffy exploded from the starting box and was far clear of the rest of this field in the early stages and that is the position that she held to the stretch. Chasing was Kiowa Trufriend. He was pressing the leader hard and making her work for everything. By the far turn he had narrowed the gap to just a length and then that is where he was cutoff as he clipped the leaders hind legs. Both slowed up just a a bit and maybe it wasn't enought to stop them from winning, but maybe it was. Either way both greyhounds ran a good race and they finished second and third respectively in this effort. Capping off the superfecta was Gs Aidyn. Aidyn never varied much in this effort and did show enough late speed to find a way into the money at the wire.

Semi-Finals of the 2009 $25,000 Orange Park Derby take place on Monday evening February 2nd at the Orange Park Kennel Club. The field has been cut down to 2 races with 16 greyhounds competing one last time for a shot into the elite 8 and the finals on Saturday evening February 7th. Post positions will be drawn on Wednesday Matinee February 4th and will be posted up as soon as possible.
