The six winners in the first round of the 2009 Jacksonville Sprint Classic were split among just two kennels. The B & J Racing Kennel and the James E O'Donnell Kennel. Both kennels won 3 of the races and among their combined 12 entries, none of them finished out of the money. B & J had 6 starts, 3 wins, a place and 2 shows and the O'Donnell kennel had 6 starts, 3 wins, 2 places and a fourth place finish. Overall on the card O'Donnell did get the edge over B & J as they won 6 races and B & J managed just 4. Night a bad nights work by either kennel, especially since there were stakes races involved. One thing was for sure there was little doubt about who was suppose to win the rounds as 4 of the 6 winners went off as the favorites.
The title for the top greyhound on this night was really a dead head. Former 1, 2 finishers in the 2008 Jacksonville Juvenile, Count Ivan (Kiowa Sweet Trey - M's Countess Amy) and Kiowa Spock (Kiowa Mon Manny - Kiowa Sweet Sue), put on a show. Both greyhounds won by 6.5 lengths and Spock just edged out Ivan's time by .01 as he ran 30.37 seconds and Ivan was home in 30.38. Both dominated from the get go and neither was in doubt at any stage in their races. Ivan gets the overall nod though as this was his 10th victory in a row!
The other big winners from B & J were Take It Over (Get Over - Cm Lil Bit) and Cjc's Buckshot (Pacific Mile* - Gable Ruth). Take It Over won his 7th straight races in normal fashion, straight to the lead and leave the field in the dust. Over won by the more lengths than any other competitor, 7, and was favored more by the gamblers than any other greyhound on the card as he went off at 0.30 to the dollar.
Buckshot should be considered the upset winner for the B & J Kennel as he took down the 2008 Sunshine State Silver Cup winner, Kiowa Wish Frank. Buckshot broke well and chased the early pace to the backside before taking over near the far turn. Coming home Frank was gaining on him, but it was too little too late as he took home the 1st round win.
O'Donnell also had a pair of other wins and by no one's surprise they also have the prefix of Kiowa. Kiowa More Am (Trojan Cruze - Kiowa Morley Cee) and Kiowa Wild Boy (Flying Penske - Kiowa Kim Says) both grabbed early control of their respective races, but the outcomes in the stretch was a bit different for each.
More Am gave a very determined effort on the lead as he was pressed throughout by Blazin Ray. He saw his slim lead shrink even further as they headed for the wire, but Am had enough left to hold on by a half a length for the victory.
Wild Boy on the other hand made it look super easy. Once he put his nose in front it was all over. Stretching his length lead at the 1st turn to 6 by the far turn, and on to the wire. Wild Boy was never really challenged in this effort and proved that he is still a threat to win a stakes here at the Orange Park Kennel Club.
Second round action takes place on Monday Evening March 23rd at the Orange Park Kennel Club.
