Race Results for Round 3 of the 2009  James J Patton Marathon at the Orange Park Kennel Club
7/4/2009 - Two Undefeated for DQ in Finals of Patton Marathon
With only two rounds left for the semi-finals one of the undefeated greyhounds had to falter, and to no ones surprise, it was neither from the DQ Williams Kennel.

DQ is the only champion of this race as he has won the finals in back to back years. Granted this race has only been run twice, but he has had multiple finalists in both years and proves best at the wire with Santa’s Playgirl in 2007 and Racheal Lee in 2008.

Once again they have weaved their magic as the stole a couple of victories again in the semi-finals and returned these two finalist back for the second year in a row.

First up was Racheal Lee and once again she showed that she is a monster over this distance. She can win with or without the early lead over 770 yards and early on in this race, she has some work to do. I know she broke close and was just off in 2nd or 3rd depending on where you are judging early from, but kudos has to go out to Deco Insta Hart. Breaking from the rail she seized control of this effort and ran a huge race, especially for a greyhound that was a big question mark at the start of this event. She held tough in front all the way to the far turn, but alas, in the end the big dog was just too much for the converted marathoner. Racheal Lee took over the lead as the duo headed into the far turn and as they say, the race was over. Racheal Lee just kept drawing away all the way to the wire, but this time around it wasn’t the fastest of the day, that was saved for the other DQ entry in the 15th and final race on the card. Runner up was Deco Insta Hart and third went to the closing Lover Girl Bambi. Completing the superfecta was Kl’s Frannie. Rounding out the rest of the field was Eds Go For It in 5th, Hallo Cable Boy in 6th, Ethereal Prize in 7th and Kiowa Fuzzy Fern in 8th.

Proving that she could still win this race too, Penny Candy put on a show in the 15th race as she drove hard early and raced away late for the best effort on the evening by .01 seconds. I know it is not much, but Racheal might just have some competition for the win in the finals and it will come from a greyhound that she knows well, her kennelmate, Penny Candy. Working for Penny is that she has already won a stakes race this year and has 73 wins in her belt to draw from. Normally a router, the marathon course is not really her bread and butter, but doing what champions due, her heart is enough for her to stretch out over the longer distance. And stretching out was just what she did at the end of this effort tonight. Starting off in the middle of the pack, Penny really did not break all that well. She did however rush really hard to the turn and as they rounded the corner she was stalking off the pace of the early leader Glo’s Legend. Legend held tough to the escape on the front end, but that is when Penny Candy decided to set the pace. She drove by to take over command and from that moment on, it was a one greyhound race to the finish line. Penny kept on stretching out to lead all the way to the wire and crossed 6.5 lengths better than the rest of the field. Early leader Glo’s Legend had to settled for show in this effort as she was outrun late by Sunsand Violet who won the photo for place. Xtra Style, who was the other undefeated finalist heading into this event, ran into trouble throughout but still managed to find a way into the money at the finish line. Rounding out this field was Git N Moody in 5th, Gil’s Maryland in 6th, Gs Rambo in 7th and Bbr Off Season in 8th. Here are the finalists for this event in point total order.
