In the 1st round of the 2009 Sunshine State Silver Cup the B & J Kennel was on a mission. Winning four of the eight contests, they were clearly the story of the evening. All of their big names showed up in a big way, but none was better than the current track record holder. He proved that in the open no one is faster as he almost set the track record again in the first round.
Talk about showing up at the right time, all the plodding along stars for the B & J Kennel decided that tonight was the night for a wake up call. All four of their winners came out in a hurry and got things done early on.
Leading the way early on was Fth Keystone Cop. The 2009 JGR Puppy Stakes winner popped the box and was in command of the race from the get go. He never looked back or shorted his stride at all in this one. Winning by almost 6 lengths, Copper clocked a personal best 30.32 second run as to took home the 16 first place points.

The 2008 JGR Puppy Stakes winner was not far off of Cop in his race in the 1st round and he had a bit of a tougher road to hoe. Take It Over was running in just his third race back and so far he hadn’t taken home a victory, but tonight would be a different story. Breaking sharply to the lead he was under pressure throughout from La’s Anthony and even though the lead was shunk a bit late, he was never really in trouble in this one. Box to wire in 30.36 seconds as he stopped Anthony’s four race win streak in the process.

Keeping the trend going was Count Ivan. This double stakes winner, 2008 Jacksonville Juvenile and 2009 Jacksonville Sprint Classic, has not been looking all that sharp as of late, but tonight he showed just what he could do. Rushing best to the 1st turn, the Count was on the lead early on and that just spelled bad news for the rest of this field. Drawing off to a safe lead down the backside, Count just coasted to the wire to win by 4 lengths in a speed by 30.45 second jaunt.

Cjc’s Buckshot was the other winner for the B & J Kennel. Normally a strong closer, Buck was SHOT out of the starting box in a hurry and took over down the backside. The lead was safe once he got his nose in front as he drove away from the field and crossed with almost a 4 length victory. The pleasant surprise of the evening, Buckshot, showed that he has what it takes to compete with the big dogs in the big races.

Now for the real story of the evening, KIOWA SWIZZLE! How fast is this greyhound? Answer: AS FAST AS HE WANTS TO BE! In the open no one, I mean no one, at the racetrack can hang with this greyhound. Just a few races back he set the new track record at 30.12 seconds and in this first round race, he almost equaled that effort. Breaking sharply and rushing to early control, Swizzle was off to the races down the backside. His only competition at that point was the clock. The more lengths he put up on the field the quicker and quicker he was going toward the finish line. When the dust settled, Swizzle won by an unbelievable 11 lengths and stopped the clock just .02 seconds behind the all time best at 30.14 seconds.

Let’s not forget the other winners either as there were some other pretty strong efforts from the remaining first round victors.
Rs Libby Lu found her break and trust me when I say, that was not good for the rest of the field. She rocketed to the front and just kept on keeping on all the way to the wire. Finally looking again like the greyhound that finished runner up in the 2008 JGR Puppy Stakes, Libby was 11 lengths better than the rest of this field tonight as she passed the wire in 30.56 seconds.

Newcomer Kiowa Smedley threw his name into the ring as someone to be considered a threat in this stakes race. Running well beyond his starts, this Kay Smith greyhound has something to prove. Winning his 4th race in his last 5 starts in grade A, this puppy can get it done and looks to carry on the traditions of other Smith greyhounds in stakes rounds at the Orange Park Kennel Club. Even though he was pressed throughout, Smedley gave a determined effort and won by 1 ½ lengths in 30.71 seconds.

The remaining winner was Uss West Coast. Breaking and outrushing everyone to the lead he looked to be well on his way, but not so fast my friend. Given Charger battled back at the toteboard to take the lead and drew away by the far turn. Turning for home it looked like a lost but West Coast was not done yet. He put it into another gear and caught up with the lead at the finish line. When the photo cleared, West Coast was just barely better at the wire.
